Greenlake Kitchen

Greenlake Neighborhood, Seattle

About Greenlake Kitchen

This 1930 two-story brick Tudor home was used as a rental property by the clients until they became empty nesters and decided to downsize and move back to the city. The existing kitchen layout was challenging. There was a small eating nook that was separated by an arched opening at the corner of the space, limiting room for countertop and appliance space. The room next to the stairs was being used as the TV room. To create more wall space and improve the layout, we removed the door to the original dining room and swapped the TV and dining room locations. We also removed the archway to connect that corner to the rest of the kitchen. The other challenge was that we discovered the 2nd floor was not properly supported. We brought in our structural engineer to help us which involved not only adding a beam in that floor system but adding one in the 1st floor system without disturbing the finished basement. We had to modify the kitchen design to make it look intentional. Maintaining the original aesthetic of the home was important to the clients. This is reflected in the design and material selections. The clients now have a home that reflects their lifestyle and love the updated version of their beautiful Seattle Tudor home.
